Event Details

Please join us on Tuesday, February 14th for the first Local History Talks presentation! We are welcoming guest speaker, Mr. Richard Otter, who will present "347 Acres in Anderson County".

Anderson residents are familiar with the area along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard that is currently home to the County’s Detention Center and Sheriff’s Department, Whitehall Park (the site of Lights of Hope Village & hot air balloon launches), the Recycling and Education Center, the Health Department, and of course the Anderson County Civic Center and Sporting Complex, but few are aware of the history that used to occupy this area of the County. Deeded to the Commissioners of the Poor in 1841, this area once housed the first airfield in the County, the County Home, and later, stockades for former chain gangs responsible for the County’s extensive road system. "347 Acres in Anderson County" will detail the rich history in this area of the County.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Local History Talks is a new ongoing program, meeting the second Tuesday of every other month. Our guest speakers will discuss interesting local history topics within Anderson County.
