Rob is the Human Resources manager for the Anderson County Library System. After working over 20 years in corporate HR, he’s enjoying working with the staff of the Library System and spending relaxing weekends on the lake.
How did you come to work with the Anderson County Library System?
Almost by accident, actually! I moved to the Upstate from Washington, DC over 20 years ago. Until 2017, I was a corporate HR professional with Verizon. My career involved extensive travel throughout the US and, while the Upstate was home, I didn’t spend nearly as much time here as I wanted to. In 2017 I decided to make a “life shift” and stay local working with some Upstate community organizations. But I began to miss much of the interactive work that pulled me into an HR career to begin with. When I became aware that the Anderson County Library System was looking for HR support, I knew it would be a great fit. (Fortunately, the Library agreed!)
Having been an English major as an undergrad I was always jokingly referred to as the “book guy-bibliophile” in corporate life. What a great opportunity to put my love of reading, community support and HR experience together!
What do you enjoy about what you do or about working at the Library?
The people here. We have a smart, dedicated staff who truly want to serve our patrons and support the Anderson community. No two days are alike and I really enjoy helping our staff get what they need to support our patrons. I also love talking with friends about what the Library offers. When a friend tells me about a new book or audiobook they bought, my favorite reply is “You paid for that? You could have gotten that from the Library with your card!” That usually starts a conversation where I get to tell folks all the things they don’t know about our Library.
Libraries are typically known for providing books. Is there something that surprised you when you started working here?
YES! First is fishing rods: the Library allows patrons to check out fishing equipment. As an avid lake angler, I was blown away by that discovery!
The second discovery was that patrons can access online resources like Ancestry.com and other information remotely. When I was in school, research -even electronic research- always had to be done in a physical location.
Do you have any favorite hobbies?
Well, of course, reading! Besides reading, though, I enjoy doing anything having to do with water: swimming, boating, fishing, diving, paddling, even once upon a time skiing.
My 2 dog (my “fur babies”) Angus and Luna, love the water as much as I do. Angus is a Cairn Terrier (think “Toto”) and Luna is a hot mess (lab/pit/Boykin spaniel).
What’s next on your To-Be-Read list?
I’m all over the place on reading. I will always be a huge Stephen King fan, but I also enjoy history, sci-fi, mystery, and memoirs. I’m currently reading a book from Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache series (based on a Librarian’s recommendation, of course!). My next in line is Richard N. Goodwin’s Remembering America: A Voice from the Sixties.
You can typically find Rob at the Anderson Main Library (when he’s not visiting another library branch) with a positive outlook and an open ear.
