Newsbank  is a information service, which makes selected articles of national interest available to library patrons. NewsBank is a complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. What it contains

Archive of full-text articles from

  • Anderson Independent-Mail (SC)   (4/2003-Current, selected coverage from 9/1997)  Complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. Paid advertisements are excluded. Most articles are in the product from September 1997 through March 2003, however, the publisher could not provide articles on some days.
  • The State  (Columbia, SC) (1987-Current)Complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. Paid advertisements are excluded.

Searching

There are two search options, Keyword and customized. You must choose your newspaper first by clicking on the Start Search button.

Keyword Search

This searches for any word(s) in the records.

  1. Type a word or words in the search boxes.
  2. If desired change the sort, or date range by using the drop down menus.
  3. Use Boolean operators to broaden or narrow the search.
  4. Click SEARCH.

Customized Search

This option allows you to build complex and/or accurate search.

  1. Click Customized Search.
  2. Type your word(s) in one or more search boxes.
  3. Choose the part of the article you would like to search (in all text, lead/first paragraph, or headline/title)
  4. Use the Boolean operators to broaden or narrow the search.
  5. Limit your search by date. Acceptable formats include:
    Jan 1, 2002 to Feb 3, 2002
    April 2001
    3-12-2002
    2/5/2001 - 4/30/2001
    Jan 7 2003 to Jan 14 2003
  6. Click SEARCH.
     

Displaying Search Results

Search results show the date of publication, the source and the title of the articles, and are returned in relevancy order if you haven't customized your search.

  1. Use the scroll bar to move through the list.
  2. Click PREVIOUS, a page number or NEXT to move through the different lists.
  3. Click on a citation title to display the record.
  4. Use the scroll bar to move through the record.
  5. Click LIST to return to the results.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click Edit Search
  2. Enter your new search terms.
  3. Click on Search

Using the Boolean Operators

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: hispanic or latino

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: doctor and surgeon

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term, or multiple characters within a search term.
Example: drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
m*donald (retrieves mcdonald and macdonald)

Use ? to replace one character within a search term.
Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Use near[x] to find terms within a specified number(x) of words of each other and in any order.
Example: Clinton NEAR5 Gore (retrieves Clinton Gore anywhere between 5 words of each other)

Use adj[x] to search terms that appear within x words of each other and in the same order. Where x is not specified, defaults to 1.

 


Printing Search Results

  1. To print a citation list, click FILE then PRINT PREVIEW. Make sure the pages are what you want.
  2. To print an individual record, click Text Only Display at the top of the record.
  3. A new window will pop up.
  4. Click FILE then PRINT PREVIEW. Make sure the pages are what you want.
  5. Click PRINT on the print preview window.
  6. Click PRINT on the print command window.
  7. Close the window if you were printing an individual record.

Downloading Search Results

  1. To download an individual record, click Text Only Display at the top of the record.
  2. A new window will pop up.
  3. Click FILE then SAVE AS.
  4. Type the disk drive, the filename and .txt in the FILE NAME box. Example: a:myfile.txt
  5. At a remote location (home or elsewhere) you can save it in a folder of your computer.
  6. Close the window.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Click EMAIL.
  2. Enter your address in the SEND DOCUMENT TO field.
  3. Add comments if desired.
  4. Check the appropriate format (HTML or ASCII text). If unsure, leave the check at the default which is the text format.
  5. Click SEND.
  6. Click LIST to return to the list.
