Interlibrary Loan is the process used to obtain materials or photocopies from other libraries when the materials are not available in the Anderson County Library system. We do not accept ILL requests for items held by the Anderson County Library unless those items have been lost, withdrawn or will not be available for a long period of time. This includes non-circulating reference and genealogical materials held by Anderson County Library system. All local and online sources should be checked before requesting an Interlibrary Loan.
Any person with an Anderson County Library card is eligible to request ILL materials with the exception of the out-of-county free cardholders. These reciprocal agreement borrowers should go to their home county for ILL services. The library cardholder may not have fees over $3 when making an ILL request and the information on the account needs to be verified as current. ILL requests will not be accepted until any problems with the account are corrected.
Patrons may have up to 5 active ILL requests at any time. Requests may be placed by telephone at 864-260-4500 or by email (please put “ILL request” as the subject), or at any of our Libraries’ Reference desks. We will attempt to borrow any items, except items published within the past 12 months, class textbooks, or entire copies of magazines or periodicals.
Most borrowed materials are lent with no loaning fees, but some libraries will charge for loans and/or copies. You will be asked when placing your request what amount you are willing to pay. If the lending library does charge a fee your account will be billed and the fee must be paid before you use your library card. Since the Library cannot be financially responsible for fees imposed by the lending library, this applies even if you do not pick up the item once we have obtained it for you.
We do not know the exact day that items will arrive. It may take 1-6 weeks depending on the availability and location of the item. We also do not know what the checkout time will be until the item arrives. Lending libraries set the due date. You have 3 days to pick up any requested ILL item once it’s sent to the Circulation Desk.
We can request a renewal from the lending library, but we ask that you request the renewal at least 1 week before the due date. You will be contacted once we hear back from the lending library regarding the renewal. Renewals and all loan limits are decided by the lending library.
Any fines and/or fees charged by the lending library are passed directly to the patron account for whom the material is borrowed. We cannot estimate charges or make any refunds on ILL fees. The Anderson Library assesses an overdue fine of $1.00 per day per item, up to a maximum of $10.00 per item, for overdue materials borrowed from another library system. There is no grace period for overdue Interlibrary Loans.
Habitually returning ILL items later than the due date, failure to pick up items sent, or failure to otherwise follow requirements may result in the forfeiture of Interlibrary Loan privileges.
